Seoul Bagua Zhang Club : Program & Methodology
Seoul Bagua Zhang Association offers a structured curriculum supported by comprehensive training manuals. We balance traditional internal cultivation with modern practical application.
Core Training Materials & Curriculum
History of the Association: A documented legacy of Baguazhang practice in Seoul.
Beginner’s Course Manual: A step-by-step guide for newcomers to build a solid foundation.
Eight Standard Palms Introductory Course: Detailed individual learning modules for each stage of the Eight Palms.
Comprehensive Training Manual: An all-encompassing guide covering the technical aspects of our system.
Practical Application: "Circle Battle"
We emphasize the importance of two-person sparring and competitive drills to test martial efficacy.
The Format: We utilize a unique sparring system called "Circle Battle."
Safety First: To ensure a productive learning environment, facial strikes are prohibited, allowing practitioners to focus on footwork, redirection, and throwing techniques without the risk of serious injury.
Safety and Practicality: Why We Practice the "Circle Battle"
Many people ask why we don’t conduct full-contact sparring like MMA or Boxing gyms. While real fighting drills might seem ideal, they carry significant risks that are often unsustainable for professional training environments.
The Reality of Impact and Liability
Even a minor car accident can result in a 2-3 week recovery period. Imagine the physical toll of a direct strike to the jaw—it is equivalent to a high-impact collision, often resulting in concussions or injuries requiring months of rehabilitation.
In the modern era, these injuries lead to complex legal and liability issues. Unlike the 1970s and 80s, gyms today must prioritize the safety of their members to function sustainably. This is why martial arts like Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Kendo remain popular among adults; they offer high intensity and practicality without the risk of frequent facial trauma.
Our Solution: The "Circle Battle"
At the Seoul Baguazhang Research Association, we have adopted the Circle Battle system. This format allows for safe yet dynamic practice:
Prohibited: Facial strikes.
Allowed: Light palm strikes to the torso, pushing, pulling, throwing, and tackling.
The Benefits: While not a "no-holds-barred" fight, it effectively trains the essential skills needed for real-life self-defense, such as situational awareness, footwork (Shin-beop), distance control, courage, and opponent management.
Single-Handed Swordsmanship (Fencing)
In addition to empty-hand techniques, we provide a complete system for Single-Handed Swordsmanship.
Our curriculum ranges from Forms (Taolu) to Full-Contact Sparring using protective gear.
The system is fully organized to ensure you can test your skills safely and effectively.
